Barons In Trouble Offensively; Oilers Call Up Top Point Scorers

Within the last few days, the Oilers have made a couple roster moves involving call ups and call downs. Ryan O’Marra and Shawn Belle were sent down on Sunday and Liam Reddox and Linus Omark were called up to replace them on the Oilers active roster. It’s no big secret that Reddox and Omark are the big guns in the Barons offense, but just how much?

Reddox is going to be on his first stint with the Oilers this season. The Barons are 18-14-1-4 so far this season. When Omark was on the team from the start of the season and the two games this last weekend, the Barons are 15-9-1-3. In the 9 games while he was in Edmonton, the Barons were 3-5-0-1. Reddox registered 8 points(3G, 5A) in those games, but they only came in 4 of the games. With Reddox and Omark being the 2nd and 3rd Barons leading goal scorers respectively, their call up takes a huge chunk out of the Barons offense. The Barons have scored 120 goals this season, Omark and Reddox account for 32, or 26.2%, of them. And of the 313 points the Barons players have registered, Omark and Reddox account for 64, or 20.4%, of those. Then, the Barons Power Play, which has had it’s struggles at certain times of the season but has come back recently. They’re currently 11th in the league. Omark and Reddox have 7 of the 38 PP goals scored by the Barons, 18.4%.

It doesn’t end there either. Jeff Petry was called up to the Oilers on Dec 27th. When you add Petry’s stats to Reddox’s and Omark’s numbers, it becomes an even bigger blow to the Barons. Petry’s 7 goals bring the percentage up to 32.5%, his 19 points bring that up to 27.1%, and his 2 PP goals take that up to 23.6%.

With the Oilers having a quarter of the Barons offensive production on their active roster right now, it’ll be interesting to see how the lines will look and if there are any signings in the future of the Barons. The first line of Giroux-Moran-McDonald will really have to step up to cover any of the loss. Hartikainen is coming along nicely but he’s had trouble scoring when Reddox and Omark aren’t on the ice too. This weekend will be a huge test for them as they have 3 games in 3 nights. Peoria comes in on Friday and Saturday, and they take on Lake Erie on Sunday.

Player Spotlight: Oilers’ Prospect Curtis Hamilton

photo by Steve Hiscock and from NHL.com

It may have not have been the greatest night for hockey fans in the USA. But it was a great night for fans in Canada, and fans of the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers had two of their current crop of prospects on the ice for Team Canada for the tournament. With Curtis Hamilton scoring the first goal for Team Canada, setting the tone for rest of the game. Hockeysfuture.com ranks Hamilton among the Oilers top 15 prospects, in a list that includes several of players from the Barons current roster.

Hamilton plays for the Saskatoon Blades in the WHL, was drafted by the Oilers in last years NHL entry draft. Looking at his stats from this season so far, and Hamilton seems to be averaging just under a point and a half per game. And he seems to know how to stay out of the penalty box with on 6 minutes. If Hamilton continues to be an offensive weapon for the Blades, and maybe a season with the Barons. He could be a one of the Oilers top scoring forwards, as the Oilers look to continue to rebuild.

Reddox and Omark get recalled.

As rumored yesterday before the Barons game against the Icehogs. Both Liam Reddox and Linus Omark get recalled to Edmonton. This comes after that Jordan Eberle was injured in the Oilers v. Flames with a Ankle injury. Omark who just recently was reassigned to the Barons, repacks his bags again to make the trip to E-town. Also in yesterday’s game Omark had 4 assists in the game, and Reddox also had 2 goals in yesterday’s game. Here’s the official statement from the Oilers’ website.

General Manager Steve Tambellini announced today the Edmonton Oilers have recalled forwards Linus Omark and Liam Reddox from the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League.

Omark, 23, was recalled by the Oilers on December 8 and made his NHL debut on December 10 vs. Tampa Bay, scoring the deciding goal in the shootout. He played in eight games collecting a goal and four assists before being assigned back to Oklahoma City on December 31.

The 5’10”, 174-pound Overtornea, Sweden native has appeared in 28 games with Oklahoma City this season scoring 31 points (14-17-31), ranking him third among Barons scorers.

Reddox is currently second on the Barons scoring list with 33 points (18-15-33) and is a team-best plus 14. This is the first time Reddox has been recalled this season.

The 24-year-old native of Whitby, Ontario, was originally drafted by the Oilers in the fourth round (112th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. In 56 career NHL games, Reddox has 14 points (5-9-14) and 14 penalty minutes.

How many points did the Barons’ throw away in December?

We know that the month of December wasn’t the greatest for the Barons. Between losing 4 of the best offensive players on a recall to Edmonton. Then dropping a season high 6 games in a row. How many points did the Barons throw away in December? Well I thought it might be interesting to see if they threw more points away compared to the rest of the teams in the Western Division. I looked at all the games for the month of December for the Division. And it surprised at what came out of it. Although the games played will never amount the same for every team in the division. So let’s look at the data, and see what we come up with here.

Oklahoma City played 12 games in the month of December, and we know that 6 games(0 points) were lost. So that’s half of the games for the month, which equates out to be 12 points. So out of a possible 24 points for the month, minus 12 points(6 games) that leaves a possible 12 points to win. But I didn’t forget the shootout loss against Texas in which they lost another point. So that brings the grand total for the month of 13 points that the team lost. But it isn’t the highest point loss in the Division. So how do the Barons compare with the rest of the Division for December?
